I am majoring in social sciences with a minor is secondary education.

My career goal as a track athlete is to one day be a MIAC champion whether it is individual or team. After graduation I plan on being a high school teacher and coach multiple sports.

I chose St. Johns because as soon as I stepped on campus I felt at home.

I don’t have just one funniest memory or moment on the team, but everyday at practice just roasting each other is the best times.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Coach Jeremy because he is kind of funny.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: Infinite. They would never be able to stop me.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: I would love to be the world's greatest racquetball player because, I would have so much clout and could make more money than just 20$

My proudest moment was when me and two other high jumpers from Marshall all got 6ft to set a record at the Hutch relays.

I am majoring in accounting and finance. After graduation, I would like to work for a sports team.

I chose St. John’s because my dad was a Johnnie and I’ve been coming to Johhnie-Tommy games since I was 7.

My funniest memory while on the team was when I kneed myself while high jumping and got a black eye. Then I blamed Coach Joe for it.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Joe. He’s the smallest so he’d consume the least amount of food which means more for me.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: Hopefully more than one.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: $20 right now because it’s worth more.

For my proudest moment, since it’s my first season doing track, it was pretty cool not always finishing last in my first few meets.

I am an Integrative Science major on the pre=PT track with a minor in music (piano). My personal goal within my major is to become a physical therapist and maybe some day look into music therapy. As far as my plans after graduation, my hope is to get into PT school right away. Otherwise I’d like to spend my time volunteering and working.

I choose St. John’s because the community is outstanding. I had some family members who went here and told me how great it is, but as soon as I finished my tour I knew I could call this place home. CSB/SJU continues to amaze me every day.
The funniest moment or memory on the team are Ryan’s infamous goggles. They never fail to make anyone chuckle.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Coach Jeremy, he reminds me of survivor man.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: One more than Brady Labine’s number.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: Trick question, I already am the worlds greatest racquetball player. So $20 would be nice.

My proudest moment of my athletic career was making the football playoff roster as a freshman.

I have a major in Business and a minor in Chemistry. My main goal with my major is to work in some sort of small business. My goal is to stay involved in football somehow whether it is coaching or refereeing. After graduation I plan on going into the insurance business right away.

I chose SJU for the athletic programs.

The funniest memories are the stupid conversations we have at the throwing pits during practice. Whether it’s politics or something completely meaningless, it’s always a fun conversation.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Jeremy hands down. He’s got so many interesting stories and if I have to die I want my last conversation to be about why three-point starts are better than four-point starts during sprints.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: There are so many intangibles with this question, but I’d have to say 13.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: $20 right now because “screw racquetball”.

Event: Pole Vault

PR’s: 14 feet - senior year of high school

Year: Freshman

Hometown: Maple Grove, MN

High School: Maple Grove

Personal:

My proudest moment in my athletic career so far has been placing 4th in pole vault at the 2017 Minnesota State Meet and 8th in pole vault at the 2018 Minnesota State Meet.

I am a nursing major with a minor in biology. My goal with my major is to work in a hospital setting as a surgical nurse. My career goals for pole vault include vaulting 15 feet by sophomore year and 16 feet by senior year. After graduation I hope to find a way to incorporate track into my life whether it be coaching a high school team, keeping up with track workouts, or staying up to date with the latest track news at SJU.

I chose St. John’s because they had everything I was looking for in a school. They have an outstanding nursing and track program along with a close knit community and a great location. Class sizes are small so you get 1 on 1 teaching from professors and get to develop real relationships with all your professors. The location is perfect for doing any type of sport outdoors at anytime of the year and is a great way to relax and take your mind off the stresses of life.

My funniest memory so far while being on the team is one day at practice we were doing med ball throws for warm ups. All the sprinters decided it would be a good idea to pretend we were tennis players and make the loudest grunting noises possible while throwing med balls. For the next 10 minutes, all you could hear was the sprinters making the weirdest noises you will ever hear.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: I would pick John Pollack because John is the type of person who would awknowledge that we are stranded on a deserted island and our chances of survival are very low, but he wouldn’t care and would find a way to have fun on the deserted island.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: 56,783

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: I would rather be the world’s greatest racquet ball player because who wouldn’t want to be a legend at racquet ball.

Personal:

My proudest moment was at 2019 Indoor MIAC Championships where I broke two (almost three) school records, claimed two MIAC titles in the 4x200 and 200, and placed second in the 60.

I am a Global Business Leadership major with a Japanese minor. With an internationally-focused major, it's my goal to work abroad and see as much of the world as I can. I love learning about new cultures, traveling, and meeting new people, so I figured a major in Global Business would be the best way to cover all three of these things. As of right now I have no definite plans for after graduation lined up, but I'm hoping to find a job that will let me travel as much as I can.

The sense of community was one thing that really did it for me when I choose to come here. There are quite a few people I knew from high school that went here, so I'd heard a lot about how much of a tight-knit group Johnnies and Bennies were. I didn't realize just how true this was until I got here. You can't go anywhere without running into at least five people you know, and it seems like any alum you meet is willing to do whatever they can in order to help you succeed after school. Another thing that I liked was the dual campuses. They both give you different feels with one being more modern and the other more old school and nature-y. I really like having that variety. I suppose being able to continue running track was a pretty good reason as well.

The funniest memory while being on the team was in 2016. It was freshman year, indoor conference, we're staying at the luxurious five-star Motel 6 in Lakeville, Minnesota. We have a few options for food, but being from the area I know Baldy's BBQ is just a short walk across the parking lot. I go in, immediately see "full rack of ribs" and decide that's what this athlete needs for a hard weekend of competition. I sit down, and since I had gotten there a little later than everyone else, I see everyone else getting their food. All I'm seeing are these little sandwiches, so I ask, "Are you guys not hungry?" A teammate responds, "We are, we just couldn't spend more than $10 on food." My jaw dropped after I heard this and realized I was gonna get a little earful from the coaches after they see what I'd gotten. My teammate asks, "What's with that look? What'd you get?" I respond, "...A full rack of ribs..." They get all wide-eyed and ask how much it was. "...24 dollars..." They all just start laughing, and sure enough, the server comes out calling for the unfortunate soul who ordered a full rack of ribs. I raise my hand, she sets it down, and I get to work hoping I can finish off enough of it before the coaches turn and find out what this noob of a first year had done. I finish all but three ribs before I have to call it quits. It's at this time Joe Vardas turns around and asks me, "Whatcha got there?" I tell him it's a full rack, he just nods and says, "Better run fast tomorrow." The next day I ran a PR in the 200 and place second. A number of teammates came running up to me afterwards yelling, "THE RIBS!" Since then the ribs have come up more times than I can count, but Baldy's once again seemed to work for me in my last ever indoor conference meet!

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Jeremy. He listens to a lot of different podcasts, so I'm sure he's picked up a thing or two about deserted island survival. On top of this, he seems to have a long list of entertaining stories he could tell to pass the time. Joe would just yell at me for having improper coconut harvesting techniques, and Tim would spend all day lounging around working on his tan.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: Zero. I'd be too distracted by their cuteness to even think about fighting them.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: World's greatest racquetball player. I'd then challenge someone who chose the $20 option to this question to a game of racquetball for $20 dollars, beat them (you know, being the best and all), and make them feel like the fool they are.

The proudest moment of my track career was winning the Lake Conference Championship Senior year.

I am an Accounting major. I'd like to become a CPA and get hired by a noteworthy firm. For my career goals, it would be pretty nice to retire by 50. That way I'd have 52 years of retirement left in me.

I chose St. John's mainly due to the Accounting department available to students here, the beautiful campus, great coaching, and the great community.

There are too many funny moments to be able to pick just one. Long runs can be pretty funny. Passes the time well when you can't stop laughing.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Probably Tim Miles; I think he knows a lot of random/pointless things that would help us get back to civilization.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: I don't like to limit myself. I'll take on as many as you can throw at me.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: I'd rather be the world's greatest racquetball player because that means I would at least be the greatest at something, no matter how pointless it is.

The proudest moment of my athletic career was my first dunk or placing 1st in the long jump at my home meet senior year of HS.

I am a Biochemistry major with a minor in Anthropology. My personal goal for my major is to learn as much as I can in 4 years. For my post graduation goals, I would like to go to some kind of graduate school.

I choose SJU because I've had several close family members attend CSB/SJU and I liked the size and proximity to home.

My funniest memory while being on the team is listening to whatever is on Collin Trout's mind while at practice.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: John because he listens to good music (@ Joe).

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: Probably all of them... not sure what to make of this question.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: World's greatest raquetballer. It is a fun sport to play and you could get paid to play professionally. Also, I already have $20.

The proudest moment of my athletic career was getting all MIAC (3rd place) sophomore year with a sprained ankle.

My major is Biochemistry and I am on the Pre-Pharmacy track. I plan on going straight to pharmacy school after I graduate. I haven't necessarily chosen one yet but most likely University of Minnesota! I'd like to become a retail pharmacist!

I chose St. John’s because I really enjoyed the sense of community here as well as the connections you make with the community. The people that go to SJU are amazing. I also enjoyed the outdoors aspect the SJU offers.

It’s hard to pick out the funniest moment while on the team with all of the shenanigans that go on during track practice-- especially with the jumpers!!

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: I'd pick Tim because he would have good stories to tell and I have a feeling he'd be good at being resourceful. I don't know this from experience. I'm basing this totally off of intuition.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: With shin guards, like 8,000. Without shin guards... maybe 4.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: $20, the fame is too much to handle.

I am majoring in Finance with a minor Econ. My dream job is to be a financial manager for professional sports players or collegiate sports teams. I would also like to create a small personal business for my art.

I chose St. John's because I liked the cross country team and the traditions we have upheld for many years. I also liked how the college is almost embedded in the woods. Of course, the academics and accounting/finance program are very elite.

The funniest moment was when the middle distance squad was doing 400 repeats outdoors on a nice spring day, and while we were warming up a dog came sprinting down a long driveway. The dog scared a couple teammates who later shook it off and continued getting ready. On the first 400 we passed the driveway with the scary dog, and here comes the dog running after all of us down the street. We picked up the pace and it felt like we were running faster than olympians. Eventually, the dog turned back, but there were some funny reactions out of my teammates.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Tim Miles because we could sit in silence and be okay with it when needed. Also, his stories would keep me entertained. The great coach he is would help me train for the olympics.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: 100

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

My proudest moment was making it to the state meet all four years of high school and getting 3rd in state in the 4x200m my Senior year.

I am majoring in Computer Science. My personal goal is to have a great programming job lined up before I graduate. To start off my career, I hope to work for a large, successful technology company as any kind of programmer. Later on in my career, I would like to explore other options as a computer programmer. These other options may be positions like a software or hardware engineer, website designer, game developer, etc. My main reason for seeing myself in these positions are because of my fascination with technology; I want to be involved with the newest technological advancements and discoveries.

I chose to come to St. John's because I grew up in the area, as my hometown of Cold Spring is only a 15 minute drive from St. John's. Since I was so close by, I used to come to a lot of Johnnie Football games with my family as a young kid. At those games, I always looked up to the tall college kids and dreamed of being amongst them one day (dream come true, I guess). Also, I have two siblings that currently attend CSB/SJU and both of my parents work on the CSB and SJU campuses, so being able to remain close to my family was a no brainer for me.

Seriously, every day is one of the funniest moments while being on the team. I can confidently say that we probably have the most fun-to-be-around men’s track team in the whole MIAC. Not only are all the guys on the team fun and overall great people, they are also hardworking and know the perfect balance between working hard and having fun while at practice.

Q & A:

Q: Which coach would you pick to live on a deserted island with and why?

A: Easily Jeremy. That guy is an animal and I could definitely rely on him to find food, make shelter, and keep me alive.

Q: If you were in the coliseum and were challenged to fight wiener dogs, what is the highest number of wiener dogs you could defeat?

A: None, I like wiener dogs.

Q: Would you rather be the world's greatest racquetball player or have $20 right now?

A: $20 right now. Nobody would even be care if I was the world's greatest racquetball player, but I could buy something with $20.

Jeremy Karger-Gatzow

Karger-Gatzow is in his fourth season as the Johnnies' head track and field coach in 2019. He was named the MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Men's Coach of the Year in 2016 following his first season as the Johnnies finished second at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. Ryan Bugler '17 won SJU's fifth individual national championship outdoors in the steeplechase in 2016 and finished fourth in the event in 2017.

He replaced Tim Miles, who announced his retirement as head track and field coach following the 2015 season after 36 seasons at SJU. Karger-Gatzow served as head track and field coach, for both the men and women’s programs, at the University of Minnesota-Morris for 11 seasons from 2005-15. Over 200 Cougars received Academic All-UMAC honors and over 250 earned All-UMAC distinction. Karger-Gatzow built Morris’ co-ed track and field roster from 12 in his first season to over 50 in 2015. In addition to coaching duties, Karger-Gatzow taught various courses in the sport studies and athletic departments.

Karger-Gatzow served as an assistant track and field coach at Bryant University in Rhode Island for two seasons from 2000-02 before leaving to enroll in graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
